What is an online magazine?

An online magazine is often thought of as a browsable PDF, enriched or not with some links and videos. We no longer believe in that. You then make something for print and will translate this 1-on-1 to a screen. An online magazine is much more than a PDF, but it is not a website either.

The difference lies in the following 7 unique features of an online magazine:

1.

A head and a tail

One of the main and most visible differences is the start and end point of an online magazine. Of course you can roll in halfway through the magazine, but there is always a head and tail. Most websites do have a homepage, but the end point is not really defined anywhere.

2.

Linear

navigation

An online magazine only has linear navigation. It guides you through the pages. Very clear. Yes, websites also have a navigation structure. Often several. But the visitor's route is not fixed. Often there are also many sub menus under the main menu.

3.

Fullscreen-

experience

Beautiful photos and cool videos deserve to be visible all over the screen. This full screen experience partly determines the atmosphere in an online magazine. On websites you often see things that can distract you, such as advertisements or other topics and reactions. The reader will linger longer on an online magazine page. You bring focus to your reader.

4.

Tuned

content

The right combination of a good magazine formula with well-chosen topics, exciting headlines and a large image makes an online magazine worth reading. This magazine formula will also provide you with insight into the interest of your readers in the long term. What content do they need? And how can you help them with that? In an online magazine you offer information much more targeted for a (very) specific audience.

5.

Visual set

There are examples of websites where there is more image than text. However, information in the form of articles is usually the main focus on a website. In an online magazine, the text-to-image ratio is generally different. It is more of a cartoon where text, image, video and audio come together. Of course you can alternate and also post long articles, but always support this with sufficient visual aspects.

6.

Frequency of publication

A new edition of an online magazine usually appears with a certain frequency. Monthly, for example, or every quarter. Until then, you can of course view the old songs. Sometimes a magazine is a one-off publication. A website is available 24/7 and can be provided with new information at any time.

7.

Push

medium

You often receive the link to an online magazine via email or social media. Because your name is in a database of the sender, because you are a customer, or because you are a member of a newsletter. It is a push medium: it is brought to you. Websites attract; a website is a pull medium. You get there because you look for it yourself. Either you end up there by chance, or after clicking on a tweet or ad.
